How to Become a Youth Lacrosse Referee
- Attend a US Lacrosse training course. To find out about training dates and trainers in your local area, go to the US Lacrosse website under Education and Training. When you attend an officially recognized officials training through US Lacrosse, you will receive a Level 1-2 training manual, rule book, rules test, and instructions from an approved training authority.
- The US Lacrosse website will provide you with information on the goals and objectives of Men’s Division Official’s Council Level 1 training, goals and objectives of MDOC Level 2 training, considering level of play, career progression, hands-on experience, available MDOC training tools.
- You must complete the Level 1 training package before you can start refereeing youth lacrosse games. After completing the Level 1 training kit you are allowed to ref youth lacrosse.
- Level 1 training begins two month before lacrosse season. This consists of small classes and obtaining a rock solid foundation in officiating. This specific training prepares officials to maintain a safe level of play, establish an authoritative presence on the field, communicate effectively with voice and hand signals, understand basic field positioning, identify if a team has possession of the ball in a penalty situation and how to apply the slow whistle technique, recognize differences between personal and technical fouls, and assess the most common safety fouls accurately and fairly.
- Establish, renew or maintain current official category membership with US Lacrosse. You cannot begin officiating until you show the Men's Division Official’s Council (MDOC) Training Committee current membership as an official with US Lacrosse. In addition to liability coverage, you are also eligible for advanced training events and additional US Lacrosse membership benefits, online official’s testing and more. Officials renew their membership each fall and receive the new rulebook for that year.
